SAFETY INFORMATION:
GYM / PANDION / PANJI HARNESSES

Climbing gyms and adventure parks manage activities that are inherently dangerous. They have seen significant expansion in recent years, attracting an ever-increasing number of customers. Some of these customers are new to vertical activities and have little or no experience with how to safely engage in these dangerous activities.

Petzl has been made aware that a user of the Petzl GYM, PANDION, and PANJI harness can don the harness backwards and subsequently connect to the non-weight bearing leg loop elastic band.

We are therefore taking the following preventative measures:

  • Reminding gym and adventure park operators of the importance of training, supervising, and monitoring before and during use of the harness and all equipment, particularly when making the equipment available to customers.

  • Providing and promoting access to educational tools.

  • Providing those who have certain GYM, PANDION and PANJI harnesses (from 2018 to present) with an option to replace the current leg loop elastic band with a new design, free of charge. (See www.petzl.com/US/en/Operators for a full list of eligible harnesses)

Further Safety Information regarding the GYM, PANDION, and PANJI harnesses has been published on www.petzl.com/US/en/Operators. Please read all of this Safety Information and then follow the recommendations below:

Gym & Adventure Park Operators:

  1. Educate and train all staff and customers according to the the Safety Information.

  2. Use and display the educational posters containing the Safety Information, which are available for download.

  3. Contact the Petzl After Sales Service team if you would like to replace the current leg loop elastic band with a new design, free of charge, by following the procedure available online in the Safety Alerts section on www.petzl.com/US/en/Operators.

We apologize for any inconvenience this replacement process might cause you and appreciate your patience. For more information, please contact Petzl toll-free at 877-807-3805 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. MT Monday through Friday or by email at Returns@petzl.com; you can also visit www.petzl.com/US/en/Operators, click on “Safety Alerts” and select “SAFETY INFORMATION:  GYM / PANDION / PANJI HARNESSES”.

Technical Bulletin: Use of Petzl Tandem Speed Trolley on Aerial Adventure Courses

ACCT TIRE Committee
March 23, 2024

This notice addresses recent discussion in our field regarding the use of the Petzl Tandem Speed trolleys on Aerial Adventure Courses, including Zip Line Tours, Adventure Parks, and other Challenge Courses worldwide.

In November 2021, Petzl issued a Tech Tip addressing the Tandem Speed trolley commonly used in our field. Members of the TIRE Committee recently met with Petzl USA’s Technical Information Manager to clarify issues raised in this Petzl notice. The findings from this meeting were written up and shared with our Petzl contact to ensure accuracy prior to releasing the statements below:

  • This is not a stop-use directive.

  • This pulley continues to meet the requirements in the ANSI/ACCT 2019 Standards, Chapter 1: Design, Performance and Inspection I.3.7, however it does not meet the newer EN standards referenced in the Petzl statement.

  • Petzl no longer recommends the use of the Tandem Speed trolley on cables as a rolling trolley on Aerial Adventure Courses globally.

  • If owners/operators choose to use Tandem Speed trolleys on the cables of Aerial Adventure Courses, it is imperative that they acknowledge Petzl's revised recommendation. Particularly, caution should be exercised when there is a risk of participant's fingers being in contact with the trolley or if it may be inadvertently dropped. Owners/operators bear the responsibility for the continued use of the Tandem Speed as a cable trolley.

  • Use of the Tandem Speed trolley as a pulley in rope rigging systems on Aerial Adventure Courses remains a recommended application by Petzl.

  • For future acquisitions of cable trolleys, it is advisable to consider alternatives to the Tandem Speed that do not carry the same usage limitations.
