Authorized Tower Climber

ANSI/ASSE A10.48 3.2 Authorized Climber An individual with the physical capabilities to climb, and who may or may not have previous climbing experience; has been trained in fall protection regulations, the equipment that applies to communication structures work and instruction for proper use and inspection of the equipment.

This course is typically taught in conjunction with Authorized Tower Rescuer.

Objectives:

OSHA and industry standards require that when an individual is placed in a hazard where personal fall protection is required, they must be trained in proper use of the equipment. Tower climbing requires additional training.

The main objective of authorized climber training is for climbers to understand the mechanics and performance of each piece of equipment they are required to use on the job. Authorized climbers typically use pre-established fall protection systems and are not responsible for selecting anchorages or systems. The authorized climber knows how the equipment works but may not have the in-depth knowledge to determine what fall protection should initially be established. Authorized climbers require an understanding of the environment they will work in and hazards they may face.
